FUJITSU
SIEMENS COMPUTERS SELECTS AFFORDABLE, LOW-PROFILE ADAPTEC ZERO CHANNEL
RAID CONTROLLER FOR NEW SERVERS
MILPITAS,
Calif., March 25, 2002 - Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADPT), the global
leader in data storage access solutions, today announced that Fujitsu
Siemens Computers has selected an Adaptec small form factor zero
channel RAID controller for new rackmount and pedestal servers.
The design win, valued at $1.3 million annually, will position the
German computer giant to win business as customer demand for RAID-protected
servers continues to surge.
The
Adaptec SCSI RAID 2000S will be offered with Fujitsu Siemens' PRIMERGY
H450 and H250 pedestal servers and the PRIMERGY R450 rackmount server,
a mid-range, rack-optimized system aimed at medium and large accounts
demanding high availability and optimum price/performance.
"The
Adaptec SCSI RAID 2000S combines the flexibility of an add-on card
with the cost economies of motherboards with integrated RAID to
give us the data protection capabilities we needed in a small form
factor design," said Dieter Herzog, vice president and general
manager for Fujitsu Siemens' PRIMERGY server line. "The innovative
controller's low cost will be key in helping us better penetrate
the price-competitive market for RAID-protected servers."
"Adaptec
continues to provide leading-edge RAID solutions for server makers
like Fujitsu-Siemens that need flexibility in their RAID rate but
also need to address the form factor constraints in the server market,"
said Steve Cochran, director of RAID marketing for Adaptec's Storage
Solutions Group. "Adaptec's zero-channel solutions provide
a compelling balance of price, performance and size."
Adaptec's
family of zero channel RAID solutions also includes the credit card-sized
Adaptec SCSI RAID 2005S. The 64-bit/66MHz RAID cards feature Adaptec
EMRL (Embedded RAID Logic) technology incorporated by leading motherboard
makers. Adaptec EMRL allows the ZCR controllers to use the SCSI
channels on the motherboard, eliminating the need for channels on
the cards themselves to reduce size and cost. Small form factor
designs combined with a power-efficient microprocessor make the
RAID cards particularly well-suited for high-density servers*, a
market that research firm IDC projects will grow from annual shipments
of 950,000 units last year to more than 1.7 million by 2005. *High-density
servers include all 1P and 2P according to IDC.

"RAID
Everywhere"
Adaptec's "RAID Everywhere" initiative is designed to
accelerate the widespread adoption of RAID in the PC-server / high-end
PC markets, in order to provide customers higher levels of data
protection and greater speeds of information exchange in support
of their business strategies. Key components of the plan include
new product and technology developments, compatibility testing,
and educational and support programs aimed at making RAID more affordable,
accessible and easy-to-use.
